Research
We are the AI & Me group at the University of Chicago. We don't view AI as inherently good or bad—its impact depends on how we design and use it. Therefore, we examine and shape AI's influence by designing AI systems, evaluating their impact, and guiding their use responsibly. As our work is inherently interdisciplinary, we collaborate with researchers and practitioners in writing, education, psychology, media, and beyond.
- Designing and evaluating AI systems. We build and evaluate AI systems (e.g., autocomplete system), identify design choices (e.g., design space for writing assistants), and assess their impact through user studies, online experiments, and surveys (e.g., effects on reading comprehension). We also explore how AI might reshape social norms (e.g., disclosure of AI use).
- Fostering mindful, responsible, and informed AI use. We translate our research findings into AI literacy efforts through classes and workshops (e.g., understanding AI), and we develop tools and materials that help teachers and students use AI systems mindfully and responsibly.
