You're welcome to drop by and chat without signing up for a 1:1 when my door is open (indicating I'm not in a 1:1). However, please note that I might not be in the office if I have a meeting or other commitments somewhere else during this time. To ensure I'm in the office, please sign up for a 1:1.

Prospective Students

I'm glad you are here and interested in joining my group! Here are the opportunities in my group: Postdocs Apply through the UChicago Data Science Institute Postdoctoral Scholars program. In your application, select my name as a potential mentor. Then, send me an email with your CV and research statement to schedule an informal chat. PhD students This year, I will recruit at most one student who has solid background in NLP and/or HCI and experience related to Writing with AI.

Apply via the main application portals for both UChicago CS and UChicago DSI. In your application, select my name as a possible faculty interest and mention my name in your statement. Please note that I'm not monitoring emails or scheduling interviews for PhD students before the official application deadline.
Research interns (UChicago undergrads) If you are broadly looking for research experiences, I encourage you to attend seminars, talks, and reading groups (e.g., UChicago CS colloquium, UChicago/TTIC NLP seminar), gain hands-on experience by working on exciting class projects for various subareas in CS (e.g., CMSC257 for NLP), and strike up conversations with PhD students, postdocs, and professors whose research interests match yours to learn more about their research and ask about research opportunities.

When there is a spot for research interns in our group, we will have an official posting on the Research page. In case you want to be considered when a spot opens up in the future, please fill out this form. Please note that I'm not monitoring emails for research interns, but will occasionally check responses to the form.

If you're self-motivated and working independently on a research project, but occasionally want feedback, you're welcome to drop by during my office hours.
